Residency gives you the right to live in a country. Citizenship gives you nationality and a passport. They are separate programmes.

Citizenship programmes typically take three to six months from a complete file. Residence programmes in Europe usually take three to six months, except Portugal, which is longer, and the United States EB-5 programme, which follows USCIS processing times.

Italy, Greece and Hungary do not require a minimum stay. Portugal requires a short stay each year. Citizenship programmes do not require you to live in the country in order to receive the passport. Antigua and Barbuda requires five days in the country within five years.

Options include government contributions, real estate, regulated funds, company shares and government bonds. Each country sets its own qualifying investment.
